Summer 2

The children have enjoyed a busy, fun filled final summer term.

In English, the children studied the popular book ‘The great kapok tree’ by Lynne Cherry. They enjoyed drawing story maps and inventing their own animal speeches, before writing their own version of the story.

In Maths, the children covered their statistics and shape units, learning about parallel lines and symmetry as well as how to compare data in bar charts and line graphs. We measured the temperature throughout the school day and used this to make our own line graphs.

The children loved their summer Geography topic about rainforests. We started by looking at maps and examining the equator and the tropics. We learnt about biomes before studying their layers of the rainforest. We learnt about the animals that live there.

In Computing, the children loved doing their second programming unit of the year, using scratch to make repeating loops.

In Art, the children enjoyed discovering the artwork of Henri Rousseau. They studied his style which included layering before creating their own jungle scenes.

In Science, the children have been learning about living things and their habitats. As part of this, we enjoyed a walk to Parkinson’s park where we worked with the ‘Friends of Parkinson’s park’ to create a bug house.

Towards the end of our summer term, the children enjoyed visiting their new classes and taking part in transition activities.

Coral class were very busy putting together their class assembly all about rain forests. They used their Geography and English work brilliantly and did some excellent drama when recreating the story of ‘The great kapok tree’ by Lynne Cherry.

After a rainy first attempt, year 4 made it to Ilkey tennis club for our fantastic end of year trip. The children loved their tennis workshops and they behaved brilliantly. Well done year 4 and thank you for another fantastic year!

Summer 1

Year 4 have had some fun experiences this half term. To kick off the half term,  we enjoyed a workshop with Dogs trust. The children enjoyed some drama and covered lots of important rules to keep themselves safe. They also learnt a bit more about the needs of a dog and how dogs might feel and react to certain situations.

Year 4 loved the skipping festival held at Leeds Trinity University. The children were brilliant at demonstrating their skipping skills and there were smiles all round as they enjoyed the afternoon and supported one another. We came away with 3 bronze awards, 4 silver awards and even 1 gold! Finally, we put on a skipping assembly to inspire the younger children to take up some skipping, in the summer term.

In English, the children learnt about persuasive writing techniques and produced a leaflet all about the Parthenon, in Greece.

In Maths, the children completed their unit on decimals before applying this to work with money.

In Geography, we went to Parkinson’s park. We consolidated our knowledge about compass points and we learnt all about physical geography by looking at the ‘Guiseley gap’. We have also learnt about Santorini in Greece and made comparisons to Guiseley.

In DT, we enjoyed using the hot glue guns again! Building on our prior learning from the cars unit, we used lolly sticks and straws to make building structures. Some of us tried to make Big Ben during the Coronation week, while others challenged themselves to make the Parthenon! We talked about cladding and the children used several techniques to cover their building structure.

Year 4 had a fantastic time during outdoor learning week and we were very lucky with the weather. In Maths, we hunted for money hung from the trees and used chalk on the ground to add amounts together using column addition. In Computing, we had a fantastic time taking photos with a summer theme. Our mission this half term was to learn how to edit photos. We used paint 3D, a Photo collage app as well as Apple photo app to crop and alter images as well as produce some lovely collages all about the summer season.

Well done children for another fantastic half term.

Spring 2

What a fun filled half term, we've had in year 4. We kicked off the half term with some pedestrian training. Thank you to Mrs Fletcher for organising such an important first hand experience.

In RE, we completed our unit all about Islam. The year 4 children had a visit from 'Equilibria experience' a non profit organisation who run workshops about Islam. We had a fun and interactive introduction to the Islam faith and also discussed what it meant to be a Muslim. The children loved doing a true or false quiz which involved getting sprayed with water! We got to look at a lot of artefacts and played memory games with them before learning more about their significance in the Islam faith. Back in class, we learnt more about the 5 pillars of Islam and made some lovely posters to remind us what they were.

In DT, we completed a new project and made a slingshot car involving lolly sticks, cardboard and lots of glue gun work! The children designed and evaluated their work.

In Computing, the children completed a topic on data logging. We loved using the Science journal app as a data logger. Once the children know how to log data, we went around school to investigate. 'Which class in the school is the loudest?' Surprisingly, when we analysed our data it was actually year 6! However, a hand drier did go off while we were recording sound in decibels!

In History, it was time to learn about the Vikings! An exciting visitor came to launch the topic. Tempus Fugit Educational theatre came to work with us and the children loved learning about the Vikings through drama. Back in class, we explored artefacts and asked questions about what they might tell us about Vikings. We were particularly interested in the drinking horn! We learnt about King Alfred the Great and did some research about him.

In swimming lessons and in PSHE, we learnt about water safety. The children enjoyed doing some freeze frames to remind us how to keep safe around water.  We also learnt about first aid and the children learnt some key messages about how to react in an emergency, such as an asthma attack or a burn. Well done children.

In English, we focussed on non-fiction texts and produced some fantastic newspaper articles about the Viking Raid at Lindisfarne. We also focussed on a heading and subheadings and wrote a fact file about Viking life.

In Maths, we completed a very practical unit on fractions and started learning about decimals. We used colour fraction walls and lots of counter work when completing this sequence of learning.

Very well done children, a super half term finished with a fantastic Friday where you showed off all your brilliant work to parents and also our annual talent show.

Spring 1

This half term, we loved learning about Coco Chanel in art. We had a visit from Mrs Branney, who came to share with the children her experiences about being a silversmith. The children were very excited to get to have a go with some tools such as a saw and a hand drill!

In English, we enjoyed learning about legends and we wrote our own adventure story based on ‘Robin Hood’.

During our maths lessons, we have been very busy learning how to multiply using column methods and how to divide using the ‘bus stop’ method.

In history, we enjoyed learning about Anglo Saxons. We loved doing some drama and played reporters, interviewing several Saxons about why they decided to settle in England.

Our science focus was states of matter. The children had lots of fun pretending to be particles in solids, liquids and gases! We enjoyed several experiments involving water and changing state. The children were fantastic at observing over time and made some good predictions and conclusions from our experiments.

In PE, we had a visit from the Skipping school and loved learning about new skipping skills such as ‘the pretzel’.

During PSHE, we talked about the importance of sleep and the children made some posters about how to get a good night’s sleep.

Well done children.

Autumn 2

It has been a busy second half to the Autumn term, here in Year 4.

In English, we watched a fun animation from literacy shed about a little shoemaker called ‘Le Petit Cordonnier’. https://www.literacyshed.com/littleshoemaker.html

This funny ‘day in the life’ film allowed us to explore diary texts and the children produced some entertaining diary entries in character as the shoemaker. In maths, we completed main blocks of learning about calculating. We covered addition and subtraction methods including column methods. Following the maths mastery format, the children did some brilliant work using concrete and pictorial methods to support them when adding and subtracting. The children showed they could exchange confidently. We had an exciting visit from Santa, in December. The children had fun measuring the boxes and wrapping paper, exploring perimeter as well as length.

In science, we looked at the digestive system. Starting with the teeth, we found out about different types of teeth and what roles they play in breaking down the food. We followed the journey of food through each part of the system. We were amazed to find out how long the small intestine is… about 22 feet!

In geography, the children impressed us with their map skills, using OS maps to look at Guiseley and the surrounding areas. The children learnt about 4 digit grid references and used ‘digimaps’ to find grid references for places near our school.

In PSHE, the children completed a unit about ‘Making choices’. They discussed drugs that are common in everyday life other than medicines and why people may choose to use them. We talked about caffeine and alcohol and when and were people may choose to use these. We looked at how alcohol affects the body and were introduced to the laws and guidelines that are in place. In RE, we looked at logos and symbols for our school and local clubs that we attend. We then looked at the symbols associated with faiths. As part of our map work, we found places of worship in our local area and we recognised the symbols for each faith on google maps.

In art, the children explored using charcoal and used their sketchbooks to sketch some poppies to mark Remembrance Sunday. In DT, the children experimented with clay techniques and had lots of fun producing tealight holders.

We had a fantastic time getting ready for Christmas, in school. The children in Year 4 demonstrated brilliant performing skills when preparing for our Year 3 and 4 carol concert. They even choreographed their own dance moves! Well done children for a superb performance. We were all very proud of you.

Autumn 1

What a fun filled first half term we had, in year 4. When we arrived in our new classrooms, there was a mysterious box labelled 'Do not open...' The children found it very hard to ignore and for days they were tempted to open it. Eventually, and like Pandora, they opened the box. Luckily, no evil came flying out but it was an exciting way to start our topic all about Greek Myths!

The children produced some wonderful writing about mythical creatures and wrote their own chapter based on Theseus and the Minotaur'.

In maths, we started with revision on place value and the children were able to use the Maths Mastery approach to represent 4 digit numbers in a variety of ways.

In PE, Amber class have made a start on their weekly swimming lessons and they make us proud with how well behaved and polite they are with the instructors. Well done, Amber. Coral class made a start on their skipping skills using the 'skipping school' programme. The children are learning a series of individual and group skips and enjoy practising at play-times with our set of skipping ropes... watch out for 'the pretzel'.

In history, we learnt about ancient Greece and some of the significant achievements they had e.g. Olympic games.

In art, we designed and made Greek theatre masks. They are designed to be bright and have exaggerated facial expressions.

In science, we loved learning about sound and completed a series of experiments. We particularly enjoyed testing what happened when you put varied amounts of liquid into glass bottles and tapped them...some of us were even able to play 'twinkle, twinkle'!

In computing, we started by revisiting how to stay safe online and we created some word clouds. We then learnt about networks and rehearsed this offline by passing messages between computers, switches and routers!
